Crucial information about the disease that killed most of America’s children-and turned Ruby and the others who lived into feared and hated outcasts-has survived every attempt to destroy it. When Ruby is entrusted with an explosive secret, she must embark on her most dangerous mission yet: leaving the Children’s League behind. Other kids in the Children’s League call Ruby “Leader”, but she knows what she really is: a monster. Ruby never asked for the abilities that almost cost her her life. The operation had three purposes: to flush out the Soviet spies Cassidy would come in contact with, to learn how the Soviets functioned in the US, and to occupy them so they would have less time to recruit real agents. Cassidy met his Soviet handlers at a YMCA volleyball game in 1959, and for the next 22 years, through a series of secret signals, codes, and message drops like hollowed-out rocks, passed them countless secrets, all carefully vetted by a top-secret Pentagon committee that weighed each bit of information and misinformation. Though journalist Wise (Molehunt, 1992) works hard to make the story more spectacular than it actually is-after all, the annals of spying are chock-full of long-term agents-he does create a compelling portrait of Joe Cassidy, an American army officer recruited to serve as a “dangle” for the KGB. A solidly told tale of a 22-year espionage operation aimed at foiling attempts by the Soviet Union to pilfer nerve-gas secrets. I was really excited going in, I knew her story would be a fascinating one. I must admit to being particularly intrigued about this instalment as Lundy was a character I found pretty interesting in Every Heart A Doorway. This fourth instalment follows Lundy, a character we met in book one as she travels through her door to the Goblin Market. Fast paced and magical, I never want this series to end. It was something I had had on my TBR for a while and I ended up reading the whole series in one month. Seanan McGuire’s Wayward Children series is one that I have grown to absolutely love. Alas, everything costs at the goblin market, and when her time there is drawing to a close, she makes the kind of bargain that never plays out well. When she finds a doorway to a world founded on logic and reason, riddles and lies, she thinks she’s found her paradise. This fourth entry and prequel tells the story of Lundy, a very serious young girl who would rather study and dream than become a respectable housewife and live up to the expectations of the world around her. Johnson still wears a wig but made clear the Wicked team has modified some physical elements of the character to complement her presentation. Wicked has featured other Black actors - including Taye Diggs, Ben Vereen and Sheryl Lee Ralph - in supporting roles, but Johnson is the first Black woman to play Glinda, who is typically portrayed as blonde and white. “I learned so much about my capabilities as a performer and, just as a human being, what I’m able to internalize and execute.” “It changed my whole outlook,” the actress says of her time with Motown - where she played nine roles. Her first acting job was as a swing and replacement in Motown the Musical. Moby Doll was a young orca, perhaps only 5 years old, who was never meant to be displayed-he was meant to be dead. But we can easily identify the first orca to be displayed to the public, as it happened only 52 years ago, amid great fanfare. In most cases, the first time a wildlife species was displayed to amaze the public-especially a species that is extremely popular as an exhibit animal today-is (as the cliché goes) lost in the mists of time. Everything has to start somewhere, and captive display of this or that species is no exception. The Killer Whale Who Changed the World, by Mark Leiren-Young, tells a fascinating story.
